The leaves look broad and rounded, not lacy like the photos — did I get the right plant?

Yes, you did — and this is Water Wisteria's most famous quirk. Its scientific name, difformis, literally means "of differing forms," because its leaf shape changes dramatically with growing conditions. Plants grown emersed (above water) at the nursery have broader, rounder, less divided leaves, while submerged growth develops the deeply divided, lacy, fern-like foliage this plant is known for. So a newly arrived plant often looks quite different from the pictures. Once you plant it underwater, it converts over a couple of weeks — older emersed leaves may drop while new, finely cut submerged leaves come in. Don't discard it; the lacy form you're after is on its way.

Should I plant it or float it?

Both work beautifully — it's genuinely your choice. Planted in a nutrient-rich substrate, it grows upright into a lush mid-to-background bush with fine, feathery texture. Left floating, it spreads across the surface to create natural shade and cover, which is excellent for betta, fry, and shrimp tanks, and it draws nutrients straight from the water column. Floating is the easiest, lowest-effort option; planting gives you more control over the layout. Many aquarists do both — a planted stand at the back and a few floating stems for surface cover.

How fast does it grow, and does it really help with algae?

It's a fast grower, which is one of its biggest practical benefits. That rapid growth makes it an effective natural filter: it eagerly absorbs excess nutrients from the water column, helping to stabilize water quality and starve out unwanted algae — especially valuable in new, cycling, or heavily stocked tanks. The trade-off is that it needs regular trimming to stay tidy, but that's a bonus in disguise: every trimmed stem can be replanted to grow a whole new plant, so a single bundle quickly multiplies into a full green forest at no extra cost.

If grown emersed, the leaves will change from broad to lacy as it converts to submerged growth — this is normal (see the FAQ). Because these are natural live plants, every specimen is unique; slight variations in size, shape, and color from the sample photos are to be expected.

Pro tip for a healthy tank: We recommend quarantining all new live plants before adding them to your main display, to avoid introducing unwanted hitchhikers like pest snails. For Water Wisteria specifically, a gentle rinse and a quarantine period are the safest approach — its soft, delicate foliage does not tolerate harsh disinfecting dips well.
