Rotala wallichii is a showpiece plant. Its fine, needle-like leaves spiral around each stem in delicate whorls, and when given the right conditions — high light, CO2, and iron-rich nutrients — those leaves flush from green into vivid shades of pink and crimson. Planted in a tight cluster in the midground or background, a healthy bunch looks like a soft, feathery flame rising through the water column.

This is not a set-it-and-forget-it plant. It rewards aquarists who are ready to dial in their tank parameters, and punishes neglect with green, leggy growth instead of color. If you already have CO2 running and a quality high-output light, this plant is a natural next step.

How the color works
Leaf color is driven by light intensity, CO2 levels, and iron availability — not by age or time. Under low light with no CO2, leaves stay green. As you increase all three inputs, color shifts progressively from green → olive → pink → deep red at the tips. Trimming and replanting the top cuttings regularly keeps new, brightly colored growth coming. 

Aquascaping tip: Plant 8–12 stems in a tight grouping rather than spacing them out. The mass of feathery whorls is far more striking as a cluster, and the stems shade each other just enough to slow leggy growth. Trim the tops every 2–3 weeks and replant the cuttings in front of the originals to build a layered, graduated look.

(Q) My plant arrived green. Will it actually turn red?

= Yes — but the color is not pre-loaded into the plant, it is produced in response to your tank conditions. Plants are shipped in low-light, CO2-free environments, so they arrive green. Once your high-output light and CO2 system are engaged and you begin dosing iron regularly, the new growth will start showing pink within a few weeks, and deep red tones will develop as the plant matures under those conditions. Older green growth lower on the stem will not retroactively color up — the color lives in the new growth at the top.

(Q) Can I grow it without CO2 injection?

= Technically yes, but with significant trade-offs. Without CO2, Rotala wallichii will grow slowly, stay green, and become prone to algae competing for nutrients. It will survive, but it will not look the way it does in planted tank photographs. If you are not running pressurized CO2, a lower-maintenance red plant like Rotala rotundifolia or Ludwigia repens will give you better results with less frustration. This plant is at its best in a fully equipped CO2 setup.

(Q) Why is it growing tall and stringy instead of full and dense?

= Leggy, stretched growth usually means one of three things: not enough light reaching the lower stems, insufficient CO2, or infrequent trimming. Rotala wallichii grows toward the light source and will elongate the spaces between leaves if it is reaching for more intensity. Trim the top third of the plant every 2–3 weeks and replant those cuttings — each cut causes the original stem to branch, which builds the dense, feathery texture the plant is known for. Do not skip trimming and expect density to come on its own.
