(Q) This is listed as advanced — what does it actually need to thrive?

= Rotala Macrandra genuinely is one of the more challenging aquarium plants, and it's honest to say it's for experienced aquascapers with a high-tech setup. To thrive and develop its color, it needs the full package: intense (high) lighting, CO2 injection — this is essential, not optional — a nutrient-rich substrate, soft and slightly acidic water, and consistent iron and nutrient dosing. It's also sensitive to instability and dislikes sudden swings in parameters. Without CO2 and strong light in particular, it will struggle, fade to green, and likely melt away. If you don't run CO2 and high light, this isn't the right plant for your tank — but if you do, it's one of the most rewarding plants you can grow.

(Q) It arrived green and looks different from the red photos — and it's melting. Is it dying?

= This is expected, and it's the most important thing to understand about this bunch. It ships in its emergent (grown-above-water) growth phase, so it arrives looking different — often greener and less vivid — than the deep red-pink submersed photos. When you plant it underwater, it goes through a significant transition: the emersed leaves commonly melt and die back, and the plant regrows submersed leaves that develop the deep color under the right conditions. This melt is normal for the emersed-to-submersed switch — but it's also the make-or-break phase for this demanding plant. Give it high light, CO2, rich nutrients, and stable soft water to help it convert successfully, and don't discard it during the melt; watch for new submersed growth emerging. Patience and ideal conditions are everything here.

(Q) How do I get and keep its deep red-pink color?

= The signature deep reddish-pink develops only on healthy submersed growth under the full demanding package: intense light, CO2, a nutrient-rich substrate, iron dosing, and soft water. The emersed/shipped form — and any growth under insufficient conditions — will be greener or paler. Once it's converted and thriving, it grows fast, so you can trim and replant to shape it into a vivid, artistic focal point. In short, the color is the reward for meeting all of its needs: there's no shortcut, but few plants can match it when it's truly happy. Provide everything it wants, and it becomes the centerpiece of the tank.
