Ludwigia sp. 'Super Red Mini' — Ludwigia Super Red "Mini"

Deep red from top to bottom — a compact, beginner-friendly red that holds its color without high tech

Ludwigia Super Red "Mini" is a hobby staple for one simple reason: it's one of the easiest ways to get genuine, deep red into a planted tank. Unlike many red plants that need intense light to color up, Super Red holds its rich red foliage — top and bottom — even under moderate lighting, making it a wonderfully forgiving choice for aquascapers who want bold color without a high-tech setup. The compact "Mini" form stays neat and petite, perfect for the foreground-to-midground where its vivid red creates striking contrast against green neighbors. Fast-growing and undemanding of CO2, it delivers that trademark red with minimal fuss.

AQUASCAPING TIP: Super Red already holds good color in moderate light, but for its most saturated, glowing red, give it brighter light plus an iron-rich fertilizer. To build a full, bushy stand, trim the tops periodically and replant the cuttings — the stems branch into multiple red side shoots, thickening the group. Plant it in clusters or individually, and place it where its red pops against green plants for maximum contrast and depth.

CUSTOMER QUESTIONS ANSWERED

(Q) How red does it stay — do I need high light like other red plants?

= This is exactly where Super Red shines. It's one of the most forgiving red plants available: it holds its deep red coloration even under moderate light, whereas many reds (including standard Ludwigia repens) fade toward green without intense lighting. So you'll get genuine red without CO2 or a high-tech setup. That said, if you want its most vivid, saturated color, give it brighter light plus an iron-rich fertilizer — and expect the newest top growth to show the richest red. In short: reliably red in moderate light, spectacular red in high light with iron.

(Q) It melted and dropped leaves after planting — is it dying?

= No — this is normal and temporary. Like most stem plants, Super Red is often grown emersed (above water) at the nursery, so it may shed some of those emersed-grown leaves as it transitions to life underwater in your tank. It acclimates quickly: the roots and stems stay alive, and it pushes out fresh submersed leaves — usually even redder than the ones it dropped. Don't discard it. Just trim away any fully melted leaves, keep conditions stable, and within a week or two you'll see healthy new red growth taking over.

(Q) How do I keep it bushy and red — and how is it different from regular Ludwigia Repens?

= For a full, bushy look, trim the tops regularly and replant the cuttings alongside the parent stems: the trimmed stems branch into multiple red side shoots, and the replanted tops root and grow, thickening the stand over time. As for how it compares to Ludwigia Repens — the two are quite different. Super Red "Mini" is red all over (top and bottom) and stays compact, making it ideal for solid red color in a smaller, foreground-to-midground spot. Ludwigia Repens is larger, with olive-green tops and red undersides, and needs more light to show its color — better as a bigger mid-background plant with green-and-red contrast. Choose Super Red for bold, dependable all-over red in a petite form.
