Green Foxtail — Myriophyllum pinnatum

The fast-growing background plant that fills your tank with soft, feathery green
Green Foxtail is a go-to background plant for both new and experienced aquascapers. Its fine, needle-like foliage creates a lush, naturalistic backdrop that sways in the current, shelters shy fish and fry, and grows fast enough to visibly outpace algae. With better lighting, the green deepens and becomes richer — no CO₂ or special equipment required.
Aquascaping tip: Plant stems in a staggered cluster toward the back of your tank. Trim tops regularly and replant the cuttings alongside — within weeks you'll have a dense, full wall of green instead of a few sparse stems.

Customer questions answered

(Q) Will this survive in my tank without CO₂ or special equipment?

= Yes — Green Foxtail is one of the most adaptable stem plants you can buy. It grows reliably under standard aquarium lighting with no CO₂ injection needed. A weekly dose of liquid fertilizer helps it look its best, but even without it this plant holds its own. If you can keep fish alive, you can grow Green Foxtail.

(Q) How fast does it grow, and how do I keep it from taking over?

= Expect visible new growth within the first week — in well-lit tanks it can add several inches weekly. To manage it, simply trim the tops and push the cuttings back into the substrate nearby. They root quickly and branch out, turning a handful of stems into a thick, bushy backdrop. Regular trimming is the whole secret to a full, tidy look.

(Q) Is it safe for shrimp, snails, and small or delicate fish?

= Completely safe. Green Foxtail is non-toxic to all aquarium inhabitants. Its dense, feathery structure is especially valued in shrimp and breeding tanks — it gives fry and juvenile shrimp places to hide and graze without any risk. It will not be damaged by most plant-safe fish species and poses no harm to snails or invertebrates of any kind.
