Glossostigma elatinoides — Glosso

A fine, plush green foreground carpet — the classic high-tech lawn for high-light, CO2 tanks

Glossostigma elatinoides — "Glosso" — is one of the most refined carpeting plants in the hobby, prized for its tiny oval leaves and dense, low, plush green carpet. It creates one of the finest, most polished foreground looks you can achieve, and under the right conditions, it grows fast into a thick, lush lawn that also offers excellent cover for fry and shrimp in breeding setups. One thing to know up front: this is a high-tech plant. Glosso needs high light and CO2 to grow low and carpet properly — unlike easy, low-tech carpets, it's a plant for aquarists ready to give it a bit more. Meet its needs, and it rewards you with a truly beautiful carpet.

AQUASCAPING TIP: High light and CO2 are what keep Glosso growing low and flat — without them, it grows upward and won't carpet. Separate the bundle into small portions and plant them spread out across a nutrient-rich substrate, then trim regularly: trimming forces horizontal spread and stops the plant from stacking on itself. Consistency (stable, strong light, CO2, and nutrients) is the key to a dense, even lawn.

CUSTOMER QUESTIONS ANSWERED

(Q) Does it need high light and CO2 to form a carpet?

= Yes — both. This is the most important thing to know about Glosso: it's a demanding carpet that genuinely needs high light and CO2 to grow low and form its signature plush lawn. Without strong light and CO2, it won't carpet properly — it grows tall and leggy instead (more on that below). It's a high-tech plant, not a low-light beginner carpet like Dwarf Sagittaria. If you have high light and run CO2, it's one of the most beautiful foreground carpets you can grow; if you don't, it's likely to struggle. Set it up right and it's genuinely rewarding — just go in knowing it needs the equipment.

(Q) Why is my Glosso growing tall and upward instead of carpeting?

= This is the classic Glosso problem, and it comes down to light and CO2. When either is insufficient, Glosso grows upward — reaching for the light, going leggy, and stacking on itself — instead of spreading horizontally into a carpet. The fix is twofold: provide high light and CO2 to keep it growing low and creeping, and trim regularly. Trimming the tops forces the plant to spread sideways and prevents it from piling up on itself. So if your Glosso is climbing rather than carpeting, the answer is more light, CO2, and a good trim to redirect its energy along the substrate.

(Q) How do I plant it and keep it a dense, flat carpet?

= To establish a carpet, separate the bundle into small portions and plant them spread out across the substrate — a nutrient-rich substrate helps a lot — then provide high light and CO2. As it spreads by runners to fill in, trim it regularly to encourage dense, flat, horizontal growth and keep it from stacking. It grows fast under good conditions, so the carpet fills in relatively quickly, and its dense mat makes excellent cover for fry and shrimp in breeding setups. The key throughout is consistency: stable high light, CO2, and nutrients give you that plush, even green lawn.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

1 Glosso (Glossostigma elatinoides) bundle, 2–3 inches, ready to separate into small portions and plant spread out. It needs high light and CO2 to form a low carpet (without them it grows upward — see the FAQ), and may transition as it settles into your tank. Rinse gently before planting. Photos are representative of the species; your specimen may vary slightly.
