Its real strength is how undemanding it is: it thrives in low-to-moderate light with no CO2 required, making it a favorite for community tanks and low-tech setups. (Q) Does it need high light or CO2 to form a carpet?

= No — and that's exactly what makes it special. Dwarf Sagittaria is arguably the easiest carpeting plant in the hobby: it forms a grass-like carpet in just low-to-moderate light with no CO2 required, a big advantage over fussier carpets that demand strong light and CO2 injection. That makes it perfect for beginners and low-tech tanks. Brighter light and root feeding will speed up its spread and help keep it shorter and denser, but you'll get a lush green carpet without any high-tech gear at all. If you've wanted a carpet but didn't want the equipment, this is the one.

(Q) How fast does it spread, and will it take over?

= It spreads quickly, sending out runners that fill in a carpet faster than most plants — which also means it can travel beyond where you first planted it. That's easy to manage: just pull or trim any runners heading somewhere you don't want them, and replant those runners to fill thin spots or share with friends (think of it as free plants). One thing to know: in lower light, Dwarf Sag tends to grow taller — up to about 6 inches — rather than staying flat. If you want a short, tight carpet, give it brighter light and/or trim it; if you're happy with a taller grassy patch, simply let it grow.

(Q) It arrived looking a bit different and dropped some leaves — is it okay?

= Almost certainly, yes. Dwarf Sagittaria is usually shipped in its emersed (grown-above-water) form, with broader, spatula-shaped leaves. When you plant it underwater, it converts to its submersed form — and during that changeover, it may drop or melt some of the emersed leaves and look a little different as new submersed growth comes in. This is completely normal; don't discard it. Keep it planted, and it will adapt, root in, and start spreading. As a bonus, it's wonderfully versatile: it also thrives emersed, so it's a great choice for paludariums, vivariums, and water gardens as well as fully submerged aquariums.
