(Q) The larger/older leaves are browning after I got it — is it dying?

= No — this is completely normal, and it's actually the plant settling in. When Water Clover first arrives, you may notice the larger or older leaves browning and dying back. These are older leaves (often grown emersed) that naturally die off as the plant converts to its submersed form, replaced by new, shorter, clover-shaped leaves better suited to underwater life. Don't discard it — trim away the browning leaves if you'd like, keep it planted under good light, and fresh clover growth will fill in. This dieback-and-regrow is simply the plant adapting to your tank, not a sign of poor health.

(Q) How do I get a dense, low clover carpet?

= Light is the biggest factor. Under strong light, Water Clover grows short and compact for a tight, dense carpet; under lower light, it grows taller and looser instead. To establish it, separate your portion into small clumps and plant them spread out across the substrate — it spreads horizontally by runners beneath the surface, gradually knitting the gaps into a carpet. CO2 isn't required, but it's an optional boost for faster fill-in. Give it medium-to-high light, root feeding, and a little patience, and you'll get that lush green clover lawn.

(Q) Why don't all the leaves have four leaflets, and is it easy to keep?

= Here's a fun quirk: Water Clover doesn't always grow four leaflets. It's naturally variable, producing leaves with one, two, three, or four leaflets depending on conditions. The classic four-leaf-clover form appears most under good submersed conditions and strong light, but you'll often see a mix — and single-leaf forms (which look like tiny lily pads) are completely normal, not a defect. However, the leaves come in, it's genuinely easy and beginner-friendly: no CO2 needed, forgiving of a range of conditions, and versatile enough to grow emersed in paludariums and water gardens as well as fully submerged.
