Crinum calamistratum — Crinum Calamistratum

A graceful, long-leaved bulb centerpiece that sways with the current — hardy, dramatic, and fish-proof

Native to West Africa, Crinum calamistratum is an elegant, bulbous centerpiece plant unlike anything else. Its long, narrow, deeply crinkled dark-green leaves rise from a compact bulb and sway beautifully with the water flow, bringing graceful movement and a serene, natural feel to larger aquascapes. Unusually tough for such a striking plant, it thrives under moderate light without CO2, tolerates both freshwater and low-salinity brackish tanks, and — a real bonus — is generally left alone by plant-eating fish. It grows slowly and can reach over 30 inches, making it a long-lived, low-fuss focal point that only gets more impressive with time.

IMPORTANT: HOW TO PLANT THE BULB — Do not bury the bulb entirely. Plant the roots and the lower portion of the bulb in the substrate, but leave the top (the neck and shoulders) exposed above the surface — a fully buried bulb tends to rot. Choose its spot carefully before planting, because this plant strongly dislikes being moved (see the FAQ).

CUSTOMER QUESTIONS ANSWERED

(Q) It's growing slowly and dropped a few leaves after planting — is something wrong, and should I move it?

= This is normal, and the most important rule is: don't move it. Crinum develops a large root system and dislikes disturbance, so after planting, they often go through a slow settling-in phase and may shed or melt a few older leaves while establishing its roots. Don't discard it — the bulb is working underground. Keep conditions stable and be patient; once established, it's remarkably hardy and long-lived. Crucially, resist the urge to uproot or relocate it, as every move sets it back significantly. Pick its spot carefully at planting and then leave it be.

(Q) How big does it get, and what size tank does it need?

= It's a large plant — its slender, crinkled leaves can grow to 30 inches or more, rising up and swaying in the current for that signature graceful look. That makes it a superb centerpiece for bigger, taller aquariums where it has room to show off. In a small or short tank, the leaves will quickly reach the surface and sprawl across it, so it's best suited to larger setups. The good news is that it grows slowly, so it won't overwhelm a tank overnight — but do plan for its eventual size when choosing where to plant it.

(Q) Will my fish eat it, and can it handle a brackish tank?

= On both counts, it's unusually accommodating. Crinum calamistratum is one of the few aquarium plants that herbivorous, plant-nibbling fish generally leave alone — making it an excellent choice for tanks with goldfish, many cichlids, or other species that tend to destroy softer plants. It's also tolerant of low-salinity brackish water, which is rare among aquarium plants, so it works in freshwater and lightly brackish setups alike. If you've struggled to keep live plants alive with your fish or in brackish conditions, this is one of your best bets.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

1 Crinum calamistratum bulb, often with starter leaves emerging, 6+ inches, ready to plant on arrival. Bury the roots and lower bulb but leave the top exposed — don't bury it fully. It's slow to establish and may drop a few leaves at first (normal), and dislikes being moved once planted — see the FAQ above. Rinse gently before adding to your tank.
