Hydrocotyle leucocephala — Brazilian Pennywort
A coin-leafed stem plant that thrives above and below the waterline
Brazilian Pennywort is one of the most unique and versatile stem plants for new and experienced aquascapers alike. Its round, coin-shaped leaves grow on long, flexible stems that can reach 6+ inches, making it a natural standout in the mid-to-foreground. Under standard lighting it stays a crisp, vibrant green — and unlike most aquatics, it grows just as happily above the waterline as below it, making it an exceptional choice for open-top tanks and paludariums.
AQUASCAPING TIP: Allow stems to trail freely near the surface in an open-top tank — emersed leaves grow fuller and rounder than submerged ones. Pair with fine-leafed plants like Hornwort or Cabomba for a striking contrast in leaf texture and scale.

CUSTOMER QUESTIONS ANSWERED
(Q) Will this survive in my tank without CO2 or special equipment?
= Yes — Brazilian Pennywort is one of the hardiest aquatic stem plants available. It adapts to low or high light, requires no CO2 injection, and tolerates a wide range of water parameters. If you can keep fish alive, you can grow this plant.
(Q) Where should I plant it, and how tall will it actually get?
= Brazilian Pennywort grows upright and reaches 6 inches or more. It works best as a midground plant — tall enough to add vertical interest behind foreground plants, but not so large it overtakes the background. Its round, coin-shaped leaves contrast beautifully with fine-leafed plants like Hornwort or Ludwigia.
(Q) Can it really grow above the waterline — how does that work?
= Yes — this is one of Brazilian Pennywort's most distinctive traits. In open-top tanks and paludariums, stems naturally grow up and out of the water without any intervention. Emersed leaves take on a fuller, rounder shape than submerged ones. Simply let stems reach the surface and they'll continue climbing upward on their own.
