Dwarf Hairgrass [Eleocharis Parvula]
A fast-spreading grass-like carpeting plant that transforms any foreground into a lush green lawn
Dwarf Hairgrass is the go-to carpeting plant for aquascapers chasing a natural, grass-like foreground without the complexity. Fine, needle-like blades grow from a delicate root system and spread horizontally via runners — filling the foreground with an emerald carpet over just a few weeks. Forgiving enough for beginners yet precise enough for nature aquarium builds, it works equally well submerged in aquariums and emersed in dry-start tanks or Wabi Kusa arrangements. With the right setup, it produces one of the most satisfying results in the hobby.
AQUASCAPING TIP: Separate the mat into small clumps and plant them roughly 1 inch apart across the foreground — this spacing is the most important step for even, dense coverage. Each clump sends out runners that connect within 4–8 weeks. Tweezers make planting far easier. For the dry-start method, mist daily, cover with plastic wrap, and flood only after the carpet is well established.

CUSTOMER QUESTIONS ANSWERED
(Q) How do I plant it so it actually forms a carpet?
= Separate the mat into small clumps and plant them roughly 1 inch apart across the foreground — this spacing is the single most important step. Planted too close together, growth stalls at the centre; spread out, runners fill the gaps evenly within 4–8 weeks. Use tweezers to push each clump a centimetre or so into the substrate. Anchor them slightly deeper than feels necessary — this prevents them from floating free in flowing water before the roots establish.
(Q) Do I really need CO2, or can I skip it?
= You can grow Dwarf Hairgrass without CO2, but the difference is noticeable. Without it, growth is slower and blades can become tall and leggy rather than short and dense, especially in lower light. If CO2 isn't an option, use the brightest light available, supplement with root tabs and liquid fertilizer, and allow extra time. With CO2, lateral spread accelerates dramatically and the carpet stays short, tight, and lush — well worth it if a carpet effect is your goal.
(Q) Can I use the dry-start method before flooding?
= Yes — Dwarf Hairgrass is one of the best carpeting plants for the dry-start method. Plant the mat into moist substrate before adding water, cover the tank with plastic wrap to trap humidity, and mist the surface daily. Over 4–8 weeks the plant builds a deep, anchored root system and spreads rapidly. When the carpet is dense enough, flood the tank slowly. The established roots hold the carpet in place far more reliably than planting directly into a flooded tank.
