Corkscrew val — Vallisneria contortionist
A self-spreading background plant that fills your tank with a twisting, jungle-like canopy
Corkscrew Val is one of the easiest ways to fill a background fast. Its tightly spiraled leaves grow tall and ribbon-like, bending and swaying with water movement for constant visual interest. Unlike stem plants that need frequent trimming, Val spreads on its own through underground runners — planting one bundle can eventually fill an entire tank wall without much effort on your part.
Aquascaping tip: Plant in medium light and leave it alone. Corkscrew Val is sensitive to being moved or replanted — once it finds its spot, it will establish quickly and begin spreading runners within a few weeks.

Customer questions answered
(Q) My leaves are melting after I planted it — is it dying?
= Almost certainly not. Vallisneria is well known for "transplant melt," where older leaves dissolve after a move as the plant redirects energy into new root growth. This is normal and temporary. Leave the plant in place, trim away any fully melted leaves, and within 2–3 weeks you should see healthy new growth emerging from the crown. Uprooting it to check will restart the clock.
(Q) How tall will it actually get — will it take over my tank?
= Corkscrew Val can reach 20 or more inches tall, and its runners will spread laterally across the substrate over time. In smaller tanks, the leaves will simply bend and float along the surface, which many fishkeepers actually enjoy. You can control spread by pulling runners before they anchor, or by trimming leaves at the base if they crowd the surface. It is easy to manage — just decide how full you want the background and pull as needed.
(Q) Does it need special lighting or CO2 to grow well?
= No — Corkscrew Val thrives under medium light and requires no CO2 injection. A standard aquarium LED on a timer is all it needs. If you dose liquid fertilizer weekly or use root tabs in the substrate, growth will be noticeably faster and the leaves will hold a deeper, richer green. Without fertilizer, it will still grow, just at a slower pace.
