Broadleaf Chain Sword is an easy, fast-growing member of the sword family that behaves more like a grassy carpet plant. Its broad, grass-like leaves add lush greenery without taking up much room, and as it matures, it sends out runners that produce a connected "chain" of baby plants across the substrate — quickly filling in a rich green spread. It stays relatively compact, making it a great grassy foreground-to-midground plant that softens a scape and gives fish and shrimp natural cover. Robust, undemanding of CO2, and forgiving of a range of conditions, it's a wonderful choice for beginners and a fast, reliable filler for experienced aquascapers.

AQUASCAPING TIP: Plant it with the crown (where leaves meet roots) sitting just above the substrate, not buried. Sword plants are heavy root feeders, so tuck a root tab near the roots — it makes a real difference to growth and how quickly it spreads. (Q) How fast does it spread, and how do I manage the runners?

= It earns the "chain" in its name by spreading quickly through runners — horizontal shoots that produce a connected chain of baby plants across the substrate. That makes it excellent for rapidly filling in a grassy carpet in the foreground or midground. Because it stays relatively short (around 6 inches), you get a lush, low-to-mid grassy spread rather than a tall background plant. Its fast spread also means it can travel beyond where you first planted it — but that's easy to manage: just snip the runners and replant the daughter plants where you want them, or remove and share the extras. Think of it as a plant that fills your tank (and gives you free plants) fast.

(Q) It melted and dropped leaves after planting — is it dying?

= Almost certainly not — this is normal for sword plants. Like other Echinodorus, Broadleaf Chain Sword is often grown emersed (above water) at the nursery, so when you plant it underwater, it may shed some of those emersed-grown leaves and replace them with new leaves adapted to submerged life. The roots and crown stay alive the whole time. Don't throw it out — just trim away any fully melted leaves, keep conditions stable, and be patient. Within a couple of weeks, you'll see fresh submerged growth coming in, and it settles in stronger than before.

(Q) How do I plant and feed it?

= It's a rooted plant, so plant the roots in the substrate but keep the crown (where the leaves meet the roots) just above the surface — burying the crown can cause rot. Sword plants are heavy root feeders, so a root tab tucked near the roots makes a big difference to both growth and how quickly it spreads into a carpet; a nutrient-rich substrate or plain gravel plus root tabs both work well. It grows fast, needs no CO2, and tolerates a range of conditions, making it genuinely easy to establish. Give it moderate light and root feeding, and it fills in quickly.
