Jungle Val is a classic background plant that's been a hobby favorite for decades — and for good reason. Its tall, grass-like ribbon leaves rise from the substrate and flow with the current, creating a dramatic green backdrop that softens the edges of any aquarium and adds real depth. It spreads readily by runners to form a dense jungle wall, giving timid fish and fry a natural refuge to explore and hide in. Hardy, fast-growing, and undemanding of CO2, it's one of the easiest ways to get a striking, natural-looking background — perfect as a tall backdrop for shorter, more colorful plants in front.

IMPORTANT: TWO THINGS THAT HARM VALLISNERIA

1. Don't bury the crown. Plant the roots in the substrate but keep the white crown (where leaves meet roots) sitting just above it — a buried crown rots.
2. Avoid liquid carbon. Vallisneria is highly sensitive to glutaraldehyde-based "liquid CO2" supplements (e.g. Excel-type products), which can melt or kill it. Skip those and it's remarkably tough.

(Q) It's shedding and melting leaves after planting — is it dying?

= No — this is normal "transition melt." When Vallisneria moves into a new tank, it often drops or melts some leaves while it adjusts to your water parameters and lighting. The roots and crown stay alive the whole time. Don't pull it out or throw it away. Leave it planted, keep your conditions stable, and it will push out fresh new leaves — usually growing back stronger and better adapted than the leaves it shed.

(Q) How tall does it get, and will it take over my tank?

= Jungle Val is a big plant — its ribbon leaves grow until they reach the surface, then trail along the top (often 1–3 feet or more in length), which is exactly what gives it that lush jungle backdrop. It also spreads enthusiastically by runners. Both are easy to manage: you can trim the leaf length to control height, and simply pull or snip unwanted runners to keep its footprint in check. Think of the spreading as free plants — replant the runners to fill in your background, or remove and share them. In a smaller tank, just stay on top of the runners.

(Q) How do I plant it and keep it thriving?

= Plant the roots into the substrate but leave the white crown exposed just above it — burying the crown causes rot. Vallisneria is a heavy root feeder, so a root tab near the base makes a big difference to growth and color; a nutrient-rich substrate or plain gravel plus root tabs both work well. The one thing to avoid is glutaraldehyde-based liquid carbon (Excel-type) supplements, which Vallisneria reacts badly to and can melt from. Skip those, give it moderate light, and it's one of the most rewarding, low-effort background plants you can keep.
