Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Red' brings something rare to the hobby — genuine warm color from a plant that's almost impossible to kill. Its gently ruffled leaves range from coppery bronze to deep red, adding warmth and depth where most easy plants offer only green. Like all crypts, it's a rooted rosette plant that feeds through the substrate and slowly spreads by runners into a full, textured cluster. It thrives in low light without CO2, tolerates a wide range of water conditions, and asks for almost nothing in return — making it one of the best ways for a beginner to add red tones to an aquascape without a high-tech setup.

AQUASCAPING TIP: Place a single plant as a warm-toned accent among bright green plants for striking contrast, or group several for a rich bronze-red patch in the midground. To bring out the deepest red, give it moderate light — the color intensifies under brighter conditions and leans more bronze-green in shade. Tuck a root tab beneath each plant; as heavy root feeders, crypts reward this with stronger color and growth.

(Q) Will it actually be red, or does it come out green?

= Its color naturally ranges from coppery bronze to deep red, and lighting is the biggest factor in where it lands. Under moderate to brighter light, the leaves develop their richest red tones; in lower light or shade, they lean more bronze-green. New growth often emerges greener and deepens in color as it matures. So if you want maximum red, give it a bit more light — but even in its bronze state it brings warmth that pure-green plants can't match. (Note: tones can also shift during the initial adjustment period — see the melt question below.)

(Q) My plant dropped its leaves after planting — is something wrong?

= No — this is "crypt melt," a normal and well-known behavior of all Cryptocoryne. When the plant transitions into a new tank, it commonly sheds older leaves while it acclimates to the new water and light. The roots stay alive and healthy below the surface. Don't remove it. Keep it planted with stable parameters, and it will regrow new leaves over a few weeks that are fully adapted to your tank — usually returning fuller and better-colored than the leaves it dropped.

(Q) How do I plant and care for it for the best results?

= This is a rooted plant, so it goes into the substrate — not attached to hardscape like Anubias. Bury the roots, but keep the crown (where leaves meet roots) just above the substrate to prevent rot. Place a root tab nearby, since crypts feed heavily through their roots and respond to it with better color and growth. From there it's genuinely low-maintenance: stable water, the occasional root tab top-up, and patience. It will slowly spread by runners into a warm-toned cluster over time.
