Bacopa caroliniana — lemon bacopa

A color-changing stem plant that rewards high light with golden hues

Lemon Bacopa is one of the most reliable stem plants for new and experienced aquascapers alike. Its thick, fleshy stems grow in clean vertical columns, making it a natural standout in the mid-to-foreground. Under standard lighting, it stays a bright, crisp green — dial up the light, and it shifts to yellow or even a warm blush pink at the tips.

Aquascaping tip: Plant each stem about one leaf-length apart in a close cluster or row. Higher light compresses node spacing for a denser look and brings out the yellow-to-pink color shift.

Customer questions answered

(Q) Will this survive in my tank without special equipment?

= Yes — Lemon Bacopa is one of the hardiest stem plants available. It adapts to low or high light, does not need CO2 injection, and is forgiving of a wide range of water parameters. If you can keep fish alive, you can grow this plant.

(Q) How tall will it get, and where should I plant it?

= Bacopa caroliniana grows upright and can reach 8 or more inches tall. It works best as a midground plant — tall enough to add vertical interest behind small foreground plants, but not so large it blocks the background. Its rigid stems contrast beautifully with soft, bushy plants like Hornwort or Ludwigia.

(Q) Will the color really change — or does it always stay green?

= Under standard or low light, the plant stays a bright, light green. Under high-intensity light, it will shift to yellow, and in very high light conditions, the upper leaves and tips can develop a warm pink blush. The color change is gradual and reversible — lower the light, and it goes back to green.
