Anubias 'Frazeri' — Anubias Frazeri (Large)

A tall, robust hybrid epiphyte with bold spear-shaped leaves — built to be a low-tech backdrop

Anubias Frazeri is a striking hybrid created by crossing Anubias Barteri with Anubias Congensis — combining the toughness of both parents into one of the most rewarding background Anubias varieties available. Its elongated, spear-shaped leaves grow on tall, sturdy stems, forming a robust deep-green wall that anchors the back of any aquascape. Like all Anubias, it's an epiphyte that attaches to hardscape rather than substrate, and it shares the genus's legendary tolerance for low light and variable water conditions. Slow-growing, long-lived, and almost impossible to kill, it's an ideal choice for low-tech tanks and beginners who want real visual impact without the maintenance.

IMPORTANT: HOW TO PLANT THIS — Do not bury the rhizome in substrate — this causes rot and kills the plant. Attach it to driftwood, rock, or decor using fishing line, cotton thread, or a small dab of super glue gel. Because Frazeri grows tall, anchor it to a substantial piece of hardscape near the back of the tank so it has room to rise. Roots grip the surface within a few weeks, after which any attachment material can be removed.

CUSTOMER QUESTIONS ANSWERED

(Q) Do I need to plant this in the substrate?

= No — and you shouldn't. Anubias Frazeri is an epiphyte that draws nutrients directly from the water column, not from soil. Burying its rhizome causes rot and kills the plant. Attach it to driftwood, rock, or decor using fishing line, cotton thread, or super glue gel. Roots grip the surface on their own within a few weeks, after which the attachment can be removed entirely.

(Q) It ships at 1–3 inches — is this really a large plant?

= Yes — Frazeri is one of the taller Anubias varieties, and 1–3 inches is simply its initial shipping size. As it matures over months and years, it reaches 12+ inches, with new spear-shaped leaves rising progressively taller on sturdy stems. Because it grows slowly, the change is gradual and easy to manage — but an established Frazeri makes a genuine background statement, far larger than compact varieties like Nana or Petite.

(Q) What's the best way to use it in an aquascape?

= Frazeri shines as a background anchor in low-tech and nature-style tanks. Mount it to a tall piece of driftwood or stacked rock near the rear of the tank so its leaves can rise and fill vertical space. For the most balanced look, pair its bold, broad leaves with finer-textured plants — fine-leaved stem plants, mosses, or grass-like foreground species — so the contrast in leaf shape gives the layout depth and visual interest. Its hardiness also makes it a reliable choice for tanks with larger or boisterous fish that disturb more delicate plants.
