Anubias Barteri 'Coffeefolia'
A bold, large-leaf epiphyte with deeply corrugated foliage that grows into a genuine aquascape centerpiece
Anubias Barteri 'Coffeefolia' is one of the most architecturally distinctive plants in the aquascaping hobby. Named for the deep, corrugated venation of its leaves — reminiscent of coffee plant foliage — it brings a bold sculptural texture that smooth-leafed plants simply cannot replicate. Like all Anubias, it's an epiphyte, anchoring to hardscape rather than substrate, and its legendary tolerance for low light and a wide range of water parameters makes it one of the most reliable plants available to beginners and experts alike. Slow to grow but exceptionally long-lived, it rewards patience with an ever-expanding, show-stopping display that only improves with time.
IMPORTANT: HOW TO PLANT THIS — Do not bury the rhizome in substrate — this causes rot and kills the plant. Attach it to a rock, piece of driftwood, or any aquarium decor using fishing line, cotton thread, or a small dab of super glue gel. Roots grip the surface on their own within a few weeks, after which the attachment can be safely removed. Position in a shaded or lower-light area to minimise algae buildup on the large leaf surfaces.

CUSTOMER QUESTIONS ANSWERED
(Q) Do I need to plant this in the substrate?
= No — and you shouldn't. Anubias Coffeefolia is an epiphyte that absorbs nutrients directly from the water column, not from soil. Burying its rhizome causes rot and kills the plant. Attach it to rocks, driftwood, or decor using fishing line, cotton thread, or super glue gel. Roots grip the surface on their own within a few weeks, after which the attachment can be removed entirely.
(Q) The listing says 1–3 inches — will it stay that small?
= Not at all — that's the initial shipping size. Anubias Barteri 'Coffeefolia' is one of the larger Anubias varieties and can reach 12+ inches as it matures over months and years. Because it grows slowly, the change is gradual rather than sudden — and each new leaf that emerges is typically larger and more impressive than the last. An established specimen becomes a genuine centerpiece plant, not a background filler.
(Q) What makes this different from other Anubias varieties?
= The leaves are the defining feature. Unlike the smooth, oval leaves of standard Anubias Barteri or the tiny leaves of Nana Petite, 'Coffeefolia' produces large leaves with deep, corrugated venation — a sculpted, ribbed texture that catches light and shadow in a way smooth-leafed plants simply cannot. The leaf edges also arch slightly downward at the tips, creating a naturally dramatic silhouette on rock or driftwood. If you want an Anubias that functions as a visual statement rather than a background element, Coffeefolia is the variety for that role.
